I feel that when you are killed and become a vruumba, the game is way too boring and the majority of people simply disconnect at that point. The races are one good feature but I feel it would be a lot of fun if vruumbas could still influence play in some way. Not massively so but maybe if it were possible to knock a player out (like the champagne bottle) or temporarily stun or incapacitate them. Or break up coop kill attempts. Maybe trigger events such as the gas leak. Just something to keep the game interesting at that point and keep players engaged.
